NEW PROGRAMS FOR 2003

Planning is presently underway for 2 new curriculum programs to be implemented in 2003.

 1.  Thinking and Learning: to teach thinking skills by using the “De Bono’s 6 thinking hats” model, “Gardners Multiple Intelligences” and “Bloom’s Taxonomy” as whole school teaching strategies, and

2. “You Can Do It”: to build self-esteem and life skills.  Each of these programs relies heavily on students taking responsibility for their learning with the support of the teacher.

“You Can Do It” specifically targets the students’ confidence, persistence, getting along, organisational skills and emotional resilience.  The program works on helping children to develop strategies to be successful.  All staff have trained for the program and $1,400 worth of resources have been purchased.  You Can Do It skills will form the basis of our Student of the Week and Aussies of the Month awards.

The “Bully Busters” program will continue to teach students how to deal with bullying.  It is emphasised across all year levels to establish boundaries and reinforce acceptable behaviour towards one another.  Junior School Council will also provide a forum for students to develop leadership through involvement in school and community activities.

JUNIOR SWIMMING

A BIG thank you to the many parents who are helping us provide the junior swimming program. The children are working in small groups, are supervised walking to the pool and back safely and a lifeguard/ spotter is supervising because of this support.

Please send your children along to school with a jumper on swimming days as they can get cold after a swimming session. Swimming will be cancelled if the weather is against us.

LIBRARY

The borrowing of Library Books has finalized for the year. Students are requested to return all books borrowed from the Library. Many students have overdue books. If these are not returned to the Library a replacement fee will have to be charged.

VISIT FROM MANORVALE PRIMARY SCHOOL

On Friday the 29th of November, Manorvale P.S came to do activities with their pen pals at Murchison P.S. They planted trees and when they where done they had morning tea.  When they went water testing they found a lot of riverbed wildlife, so they found that there is a very good water system in the Goulburn River.  When they left they had a new friend.  Thanks to Tamara and Charlotte’s mums for cooking the lunch and all the mums who made morning tea.  The kids really enjoyed the barbeque and the cakes and snacks.  Thanks to Mr. Varapodio for the apples.

 By Jack

“Stop reading, everyone, they’re here,” said Mrs. Tuena with an excited look on her face.  We all walked slowly outside to meet our pen pals from Manorvale.  We had a funny way of sharing it, but we were excited too.  We walked back inside for some unknown reason and our pen pals followed.  It was Friday, the 29th of November, so we had a good excuse to be tired.

We traded cards with our pen pals, but my pen pal, Kayla could not because she wasn’t there.  But it was okay, because she sent me a freddo frog.  I walked around the school with different people, but mostly Alice and her new friend Jesse, as in a boy Jesse.  I think Alice really liked him, but I know for a fact that he loved himself.

We split into two groups and I was in the first group, which went tree planting at Smith’s farm.  The ground was really dry, waiting for rain.  When we had planted all of the trees, we went back to school and ate lunch.  For lunch we had a barbeque, cooked by Marlene and Leanne.  Believe me, they are really good cooks.  The Manorvale children’s mums mustn’t feed them much because they ate a fair bit.

When we were all full we were off to our second environmental activity, which was collecting different creatures from the water.  If we found lots of the same bugs, our water wouldn’t be so good, but luckily for us, we found lots of different bugs, like water scorpions, dead frogs, fish, yabbies and shrimps.  It was really interesting to find out the names of the animals that we found, because I didn’t even know that they existed.  We walked back to the school and said goodbye to our pen pals (tear).
